While it’s not impossible to paint during sunny weather, there are particular rules you should adhere to ensure that your painting job is at its best. When it’s hot outside and paint is in direct sunlight, paint can dry before it fully binds, leading to cracks or peeling while you paint in the future. For example, you shouldn’t apply oil and latex paints when the weather is too hot or cold. In the winter, it’s best not to paint below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for oiled points, and the weather shouldn’t be any lower than 50 degrees for latex paints. Here are three things to remember when painting in hot weather.
When Painting, Pay Attention to Where Your House Faces
If you take on a painting project on a hot day, you should work around your home to ensure that you don’t damage a fresh coat of paint. Direct sunlight also heats the substrate and dries out paint, often too quickly. Therefore, working on the south side of your home early in the morning is best when doing a paint job. It’s also best to get to the west side of a house before the sun reaches it. You can paint the east side of the home in the late afternoon once it cools off or early in the morning.
Learn How to Thin Paint
You can restore paint with as much as 10% water in thin batches. However, if you do this all day, you’ll have more water than paint. After each break or after lunch is an ideal time to thin batches. The paint that you aren’t using should go in the shade. Also, an extender formulated by the manufacturer to match the carrier in the paint is better than water. An extender pigment is a naturally occurring chemical that usually uses a white color added to paint or coating to improve durability and resistance to corrosion or wear.
Ice Down Your Paint Can Before Painting
You can ice down your paint can by dropping a few cubes into the bucket before inserting the liner and filling it with the paint. An ice patch will keep the paint cool to ensure it doesn’t thicken before you use the paintbrush.
You should also consider hiring a color consultant if you’re unsure what paints will blend seamlessly into your home’s architecture. Contact Columbia Paint today if you’re a homeowner looking for various high-quality paints in stunning colors.
