Beyond White: Ceiling Paint Color Trends

Consider these factors when deciding your ceiling paint color.

If you have been considering upgrading your home’s interior design, don’t just paint your walls; give your ceiling some color, too. Adding color to a ceiling significantly transforms the room’s atmosphere, creating a contemporary look. Consider the room’s purpose and the look you want to accomplish when exploring ceiling paint color trends. Do you want to make a small living room seem enlarged? Or provide the main bedroom with a cozy, intimate feel? At the end of the day, you can find the ceiling paint color that fits your needs.

Make Small Rooms Look Bigger

Lighter colors give the illusion of added space in general. If you want to make a small room seem bigger, select lighter colors to match the wall and ceiling colors. As a result, the room will appear brighter and spacious. Another option is pairing lighter colors on the ceiling with darker walls if you favor contrasting colors. This combination of ceiling paint colors might make rooms with low ceilings feel more spacious.

Add a Cozy, Intimate Feeling

Select darker colors to add warmth and coziness to a small bedroom or library nook. For a uniform look, paint the ceiling and walls the same color, or reign in a very high ceiling by painting it a couple of shades darker than your walls.

Additional Tips

  • Consider pairing cobalt blue or another dark color with white walls to develop a dramatic contrast. This might work particularly well with rooms that receive natural light during the day.
  • For angled or asymmetrical ceilings, paint them the same color as the walls to create a blended look. You may also paint in contrasting colors to highlight their unique style.
  • Another tip is to use darker colors to make vaulted ceilings feel lower or apply light colors to improve their spacious look.
  • Make sure to tape off the walls because it is harder to “cut in” a ceiling when the walls stay as is. “To cut in” refers to using a paintbrush to make straight lines along the edges of painted areas, like baseboards, corners, trim, and the ceiling line. Unless you have extensive experience with freehand cutting in, you should use painter’s tape to paint a ceiling.
