Remodeling your home is an exciting prospect. But with the upcoming holiday season turning into a frenzy, that might be too much to handle. That’s why fixing up your bathroom with a brand new coat of paint could be the answer you need. It’s a relatively quick and easy project to get done in a weekend or less. Whatever aesthetic you wish to pursue, do remember that bathrooms tend to be moist and humid places that can ruin all of your efforts.
Choosing Oil or Latex
Water-based latex paints withstand the wet conditions within a bathroom amazingly well. Oil paint is incredibly durable and won’t disintegrate when you scrub it with ferocious zeal. But the problem is, you’ll need mineral spirits to complete the cleaning process. It takes a long time to finish drying and emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that make every visitor sick. Plus, oil paint can turn an unappealing color of yellow in unfavorable lighting conditions. If you need to get this project over and done with, washable latex paints will be your best bet.
Determining Which Finish to Use
Great work on coating the walls with some fresh paint! The next step is to choose which finish you’ll use to protect the new layers. The reason why the finish matters so much are that it adds to the shine. Plus, the finish seals in the chosen color and helps the paint last longer. On top of that, you’ll also make the painted walls more resilient against mold and mildew growth.
Since this is the case, choose a semi-gloss or glossy finish that repels moisture infiltration. The molecular bond of the paint won’t be immediately obvious to the untrained eye. But this paint diminishes the moisture and speeds up the evaporation process. The most important part of bathroom upkeep is sanitization. A clean bathroom looks much better; if your floors are water damaged and the baseboards are choked in dust, all the cheerful sunflower or robin’s egg paint won’t make it more aesthetically appealing.
Changing the Look of the Ceiling
Finally, it’s never a good idea to overlook the bathroom ceiling. This aspect of the project might sound pointless because of the way steam rises. But you’ll be thankful that you did it anyway. For the best results, select satin or semi-gloss paint finishes!
